Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or location entered in a search tool is sent directly to the outside provider that operates it. The provider processes the query and supplies the result. We do not keep or log those search terms on our own systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
We retain a message sent by email long enough to respond and manage the exchange. It remains within our organization unless disclosure is required by law.
Data We Gather Automatically
Our servers automatically receive basic technical details when a page loads:
- Page-view times and the pages visited
- Device type and operating system
- Browser name and version
- IP address assigned to the device
- Time spent on pages
- Referring site, when one is available
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files placed on a device. They and analytics services help combine traffic data, such as popular pages and exit points. Browser controls can block cookies, although disabling them may change how some site functions behave.
What We Do With This Data
- Route a query to the selected search partner
- Maintain site availability and performance
- Diagnose faults and correct technical problems
- Measure which pages are useful or need improvement
- Display advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
Carteret County Criminal History does not host, compile, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It publishes general directions to the Carteret Sheriff's Records Division, the Clerk of Superior Court, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry. We are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Visitor information is not assembled into a consumer report or a file about another person.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies operate the search boxes. Their privacy policies, retention rules, and sharing practices govern data entered there. We do not control those practices, so review the provider's policy before submitting a query.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to the Carteret County government, North Carolina courts, state agencies, legal resources, or private tools. Once a visitor leaves this site, the destination's own privacy terms apply. Review them before providing personal data.
Advertising providers may use their systems to follow activity across sites for targeted advertising. We do not operate that tracking.
Who Might See Your Data
We do not sell personal data. Limited information may be available to:
- Analytics providers measuring traffic and performance
- Search partners processing a visitor's query
- Advertising networks serving page ads
- Government or law-enforcement bodies acting under a valid legal order
How We Protect Your Data
Standard safeguards protect the data we collect. No Internet system can be guaranteed secure, however, and we cannot promise that a breach will never occur.
Users Under 18
This service is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal data from a person under 18. If such data is identified, we will delete it.
Your Data Rights
North Carolina's Identity Theft Protection Act, G.S. Chapter 75, Article 2A, and the consumer-protection provisions of G.S. 75-1.1 may provide rights or remedies in applicable circumstances. At a minimum, you may:
- Request correction of inaccurate information
- Ask what information we hold about you
- Opt out of certain processing where available
- Request deletion of your data
